System improvement projects

In addition to all the work we do to keep our system running smoothly, we're constantly doing work to modernize and improve the buses and trains you ride, the stations you visit, tracks you ride over and the technology that connects you to it.

Here, we detail just some of the ongoing work to bring you a better CTA!

Current projects & ongoing initiatives

'L' (rail) system

  95th/Dan Ryan renovation We're renovating and expanding the 95th/Dan Ryan bus & Red Line terminals.   IMD renovation We're renovating the Illinois Medical District station and adding more accessibility.   Garfield Gateway A project to rehabilitate the Garfield Green Line station & serve as a catalyst for community development.
  Quincy improvements A $18.2 million renovation to the historic Quincy station will preserve its history, while making the station.   Your New Blue Big improvements are in store for the more than 80,000 daily riders of the CTA's Blue Line O'Hare branch.   Red & Purple Modernization The RPM Program is a series of projects to improve service on the Red and Purple Lines.
  Garfield Gateway Rehabilitating the Garfield Green Line station & serve as a catalyst for community development.   Slow zone elimation Learn about work we're doing to renovate and fix tracks to eliminate conditional slow zones and speed.   FastTracks A comprehensive program of track repairs and maintenance designed to provide you with a faster commute and smoother 'L' ride.
  Red Ahead A comprehensive program of projects improving Red & Purple from Linden to 130th.   Elevator & Escalator Upgrades We perform continual work to maintain, recondition and upgrade our elevators and escalators.

Bus system

  #31 31st Pilot Piloting new bus service along the along the eastern portion of the 31st Street corridor.   Electric Buses Battery-powered buses provide a cleaner, quieter ride that reduces fuel and emissions.
  Ashland Bus Rapid Transit a vision for Ashland Avenue that would provide fast, reliable and convenient transportation.
  Prepaid Boarding Pilots With prepaid boarding, you no longer need to wait in line to pay your fare onboard the bus.
  Loop Link A modern transportation upgrade on Washington, Madison, Clinton and Canal for faster buses.

Completed Bus & Rail Projects

  Wilson station renovation We're renovating the Wilson station to make it a stop for Red Line & Purple Line Express service.   Cermak-McCormick Place A new, modern, accessible station at Cermak-McCormick Place on the Green Line.   More Track Renewal Learn about a range of other recent track renewal projects.
  New Washington/Wabash A new, modern, accessible station at Washington/Wabash on the Loop 'L' replaced two old ones.   Red South Reconstruction We replaced the Dan Ryan Line's tracks, speeding up South Side Red Line service.   Bus Service Improvements A variety of improvements we've recently made to bus service & the rider experience.
  Clark/Division Renovation We & CDOT have done a complete, accessible renovation of the Clark/Division station.   Loop Track Renewal We did major work to renovate Loop tracks and junctions to improve travel times & service reliability.
